CRD engine “rattle” :
The rattle can sound like noisy valve tappets, or rapid machine gun type rattle. The injector could be fouled by contaminant, or is seizing due to inadequate lubrication. Excessive fuelling will be causing detonation inside the combustion chamber, instead of smooth combustion.
CRD Injectors and Fuel pumps are very expensive ($2000 per injector is not uncommon). They run incredibly fine tolerances and are highly stressed due to enormous pressures and high temperatures. Compared to older technology diesel fuel systems, CRD are totally unforgiving when it comes to fuel contamination. Very small amounts of water or contamination will wreck pumps and injectors. They are essentially non-repairable, so it means new components.
But the damage doesn’t always stop with injectors and pumps. Sticking injectors can cause gross over-fuelling resulting in melted pistons! Start thinking $10,000 to $20,000 and for a 3-4 year old vehicle you’ll probably be over-capitalizing repairing it!
Treat any injector “rattle” very seriously indeed!
CRD engines have been developed to meet the latest emission standards and diesel fuel sulphur is now very low for the same reason. But low sulphur fuel happens to compound another problem…lubricity! At a time when pumps and injectors rely even more on diesel fuel for lubrication, it has actually reduced.
Many CRD engines are also prone to building high levels of soot in the engine oil. For this reason, we also recommend using our DeSLUDGE Flushing Oil Concentrate just prior to an engine oil change, plus our FTC catalytic decarbonizer in the diesel fuel.
Directions for use:
Add directly to diesel at 1:8000 (eg 10ml / 80L diesel). A 250ml squeeze-measure-pour pack will treat 2000L of diesel .. do NOT overdose. Can also be used in older type (rotary pump) diesel engines.
Not suitable for petrol engines. Keep out of reach of children. If swallowed do NOT induce vomiting. Seek medical attention.
Ford 2.4L CRD engine. At around 50,000km the engine would occasionally produce a rattly pinging noise under acceleration from cold, but would disappear after a km or two. The rattle increased slightly, but at around 70,000km a severe and harsh rattle emerged. It became extreme within 3 days and sounded like the engine was in its death throws. CRD Fuel Enhancer was added to the diesel fuel, the rattle decreased immediately and disappeared within 100kms. It is believed an injector was sticking open allowing excess fuel to cause severe detonation. Damage was avoided, and at 120,000km (70,000km after the first rattle) the engine is still going well.
